She took off again.

When she’d disappeared, Eddie warbled, “Mama said your Aunt Gin used to live in the chicken coop back of her house. Mama says she’s a looney tune.” Eddie always sweated at times like this. He was as wet as the outside of a cold watermelon in August, the wettest Jerrold had ever seen him.

“All due respeck, Eddie, your Mama don’t know nuthin.’” He spit in the dirt like his daddy did when he heard something hopelessly stupid. “A well-timed chicken coop retreat is an honorable ole southern custom. Gen’l Jackson hisself invented it.” Jerrold opened the big brown paper bag. Inside he saw seven towering silos of Avon lady hairspray cans. He closed the bag without comment. “Aunt Gin hung out with her pullets fer a very short spell. It was whilst her roof was bein patched, right after she got the place out of hock from the bank.”
